What is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder "PTSD"?

Author: Priscilla Souto, LMHC, NCC

Most of us are familiar with the term PTSD; and more and more of us causally use this term to describe how we may have responded to a “traumatic event”, but what exactly is PTSD?  And how do you know if you have it?

PTSD is a disorder in which a person has difficulty recovering after experiencing or witnessing a terrifying event.  It’s normal to have upsetting memories, feel on edge or have trouble sleeping after a traumatic event, however if it’s been longer than a few months you may have PTSD.  It is best to consult a professional to be screened for this and any other disorder, before self-diagnosing.  Therapy can help people recover from PTSD.  You are not alone; Boca Behavioral Health is here to help you heal. We have clinicians who specialize in treating PTSD and all types of trauma related issues. Please call or email us to see how we can help.
