When the large majority of people hear the term PTSD, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, they automatically assume the person suffering is or was a soldier. But in reality, any person who has survived a trauma can suffer from PTSD. Whether due to childhood abuse, sexual assault, or an abusive relationship, all of these things can lead to PTSD. Symptoms may include flashbacks, nightmares, and severe anxiety, as well as uncontrollable thoughts about the event. Trauma is defined as a deeply distressing or disturbing experience, so by definition, anyone who experiences trauma could struggle with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
