Self-esteem is the degree to which one feels confident, valuable, and worthy of respect. It exists on a continuum from high to low. Where a person’s self-esteem falls on this spectrum can influence one’s overall well-being. A person with low self-esteem thinks lowly of themselves and may allow others to treat them in the way they think they deserve to be treated, which is almost always not in a positive way. The effects of low self-esteem could be eating and food issues, depression, social anxiety, codependency and self-harm.
